Yes. It’s another…

October 26, 2012

…ramble. Because that’s all my brain seems capable of these days. :)

Today with my boy, I’m Mama Llama. Mama Hippo, Mama Sheep and now, Mama Llama. I’ll take it. Have you ever noticed the eyelashes on those things?

Since I seem to be popping up on here to do random thoughts, I’ll throw some more out there…

I’m SO SORE. I wish I could say I’ve gotten my act together and started working out again (I haven’t), but no…it’s from squatting down to tape the corners of tablecloths on 17 or 18 tables/4 sides. Do the math. And then doing the stairs of the Science Museum in speedy motion~ 8th graders can be quick, yet sporadic, so you wanna keep moving~ a dozen times/double massive staircases for each floor. I want to groan like a creaky rocker with every step I take, every stair I go up or down, every time I sit OR stand, and in general, every time I breathe.

I need to work out.

Another mouse made an appearance. I am moving out of the country.

I shouldn’t be saying anything mouse-related because I have friends from California coming next week~ hello, Stephanie and Vanessa~ I promise to get this taken care of before you get here. Ahem. Correction. I’ll get Nate right on that…

My daughter’s play started last night and I missed opening night for the Jonathan Thulin CD release concert. It was such a fun night. It’s always amazing to me how a large group of people who don’t all know each other can come together with no practice and make some magical music happen. I think we rehearsed an hour all together~ not the whole list of songs~ and still managed to pull it off. Miraculous, I’d say.

You can listen and purchase his entire CD HERE: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-white-room/id566780156

So tonight and tomorrow I will be able to enjoy Greyley’s show…can’t wait. Usually half the show is spent laughing at Indigo’s laughing. He gets such a kick out of these school productions.

I love nice people and making friends with people in unexpected places~ if you’re reading this Korey~ it made my day yesterday to meet you.

Have a fabulous weekend! I promise soon I’ll have less ramblings and more things of substance to say. Maybe.

Breaking News…

October 17, 2012

I will no longer be receiving Essence magazine. Whoever sent the last year’s subscription, thank you. My time is up.

I won’t be acting now. ^^ I have learned a lot, though.

Yesterday was probably the last warm day I’ll see for a while.

I need chocolate.

I’ve been too busy.

My house is making me pay.

I love Swede Hollow’s chai the very most.

These flowers were so pretty, I thought they were fake. They’re not.

You, too, can enjoy the flowers at Gardens of Salonica, along with some Artichoke Saganaki that is divine.

My friend and I discussed chicken at length, via text, and I have to agree with her~ I don’t care for chicken chunks.

Mice are cute. Outside. Or in cages.

Fact: I do scream like a woman when I see a mouse.

Curly hair is never boring. Never neat and tidy, either. Comical, yes. Supremely unpredictable, uh-huh. Polished, forget it.

I have a teenager in the house.

I know songs like Hot Cheetos and Takis. (see above) I haven’t experienced Takis yet, but I found out yesterday that I love me some Hot Cheetos.

My son moved from calling me Mama Hippo to Mama Sheep. I kinda miss Mama Hippo, but just love hearing him call me anything.

I’ve never written so much in my life, but miss writing on this blog daily.

Strange Rules

August 17, 2012

Rules Pictures, Images and Photos

We have strange rules in our house. It’s a common thing for us to be correcting the kids and for them to suddenly bust out laughing~ not something a parent really loves when they’re in deep correction mode. Our children have finally brought it to our attention how weird we are. Fortunately for us, they are content being different. Also, thankfully, they’re good, sweet kids; otherwise, their laughing would NOT be funny.

*A brief detour: For a while there I was afraid my daughter was going to turn out to be preppy. EEK! The very thought curled my toes. If you’re reading this, Greyley, I promise to love you even if you wear argyle cashmere sweater sets and your hair is in a perfectly coiffed ponytail every day of the week. Swallow. Blink, blink. Truly, I will.

I like it that they’re a little bit left of center. AND I feel a little bad for them at the same time. It means heartache. It also means they’re exceptional.

This is a recurring topic throughout our lives~ for both Nate AND me.

Nate looked at me the other day and said, “You know, not everyone is going to GET us.”

Um, yeah. It’s been a long hard lesson, but I think I’m finally getting THAT.

An old boyfriend said it best, “You and Nate are just out there…on a cloud…together…”

I wanted to bop him upside the head when he said that, but he was right.

Anyway…here’s a sampling of some of the rules that have come out of my mouth just recently:

*No rollerblading in the living room!

*No flooding the bathroom with bubbles!

*Stop flinging __________.  (My son has a serious flinging condition. Flinging- to twirl any and everything very, very fast)

*No playing bongos on your food!

*My buns are NOT your drumset!

*OKAY, let’s De-Chipmunk right now! (think of Alvin singing and you’ll get it)

*No more skating in the tub!

*A bird is going to pluck your eyes out if you disrespect me. It’s Bible. Proverbs 30:17 (For some reason, this sends them into FITS of laughter.)

And the most frequent one of all, so perhaps not very effective:

*If you want to live a long and happy life, you WILL CLEAN YOUR ROOM.

That last one needs work. They’re too happy and young to imagine being otherwise.

Anyway…so I guess there’s four of us…out there…on a cloud…together…

WWWWD?

July 25, 2012

Ever since I got this much-coveted Wonder Woman mug, I’ve been asking myself, “What Would Wonder Woman Do?

I know it’s really supposed to be WWJD? What would Jesus do? And I may blog about that someday…if I can find a Jesus mug.

However, what I’m finding is that it can’t really be WWWWD because Wonder Woman really doesn’t have to deal with every day situations like I do…so it’s more like WWWWND? What would she NOT do? What small tortures does she get out of every day?

I bet she never leaves her wallet in the grocery store.

I bet she never has to vacuum the living room…around a grand piano, 6 guitars, 3 flutes and a set of congas.

I bet she never has to get up in the middle of the night and trips on dog you-know-what while cleaning up a child’s you-know-what.

I bet she never says you-know-what.

I bet she never feels insecure about anything, because, well…she’s Wonder Woman.

I bet she never feels bloated.

I bet she never passes on a piece of chocolate cake. Well…maybe. No…no, I don’t think she does. Of course, she can eat whatever she wants.

I bet she never second guesses herself.

I bet she never has blisters on her feet.

I bet she never gets something stuck in her teeth.

I bet she never goes to the gynecologist.

I bet she never waits for HIM to call. You know, The One.

I bet she never waits, period.

I bet she never says something really dumb and then has it replay over and over and over in her mind.

I bet she never looks silly when she dances.

I bet she never has cobwebs.

I bet she never falls down the stairs, or up, for that matter.

I bet she never has a wedgie.

I bet she never has all the ice fly forward in the glass while she’s drinking, causing the drink to go all over her costume and face.

Speaking of that, I bet she never gets stains. Think of all the money she saves on spot remover. And come to think of it, she doesn’t need an iron either, because her costume doesn’t wrinkle. And since her costume is so perfect, that settles the problem of WHAT AM I GOING TO WEAR? day in and day out. Imagine how orderly her closet is! And there isn’t an abundance of hair accessories either, because that crown is perfection and cancels out any other accessory that might be halfway covet-worthy. Plus, when you have blue-black hair that never gets frizzy or too flat, you’re not really concerned about costumes or crowns or wrinkles or problems, because you have impeccable blue-black hair and that’s just…cool.

Sigh.

I love Wonder Woman.

The Sad Demise of Plurals

June 20, 2012

Due to the astonishing rise in apostrophe usage, plurals are quickly becoming extinct. If nothing is done to remedy this situation, plurals will be a thing of the past.

Dun dun dun (cue scary organ music)

Everywhere you look, apostrophes are running rampant. Menus, church bulletins, SCHOOL PAPERS and even published books are throwing plurals out to pasture. Desperate times call for desperate measures, people.

See if you can find the errors in this brief paragraph:

Parent’s, please bring your childrens’ yearbook’s to the class party. We would like all the boy’s and girl’s to sign yearbook’s for a memory’s keepsake.

No, the school handout I saw wasn’t this bad, but I promise I’ve seen all of these mistakes at one time or another. If your heart constricted and your breath became shallow while reading the above, you feel my pain. Thank you. If you don’t see anything wrong with those sentences, maybe God is trying to tell you something. (cue a heavenly choir)

I put this status on FB the other day:

Plurals feel highly neglected with all the misused apostrophes…just thought you should know.

I was asked for help, so here I am. :)

Let’s talk about apostrophes.

*Apostrophes and contractions belong together. don’t, isn’t, haven’t, she’s

*Apostrophes are all like, “MINE!” They show possession. Put the apostrophe before the s. the girl’s toe, the boy’s frog.

Note that names ending in s or the s sound don’t HAVE to have the added s, but it’s preferred. Ross’s books, Mr. Lees’s food, Miss Jones’s cookie.

*Throw in an apostrophe when a noun to follow is implied. It is my mother’s.

Speaking of mothers, those mother-in-laws can be tricky…

*In singular compound nouns, show possession with ‘s at the end. my mother-in-law’s tree

*In plural compound nouns, make the noun plural first and then add the ‘s at the end. two mothers-in-law’s stories, three brothers-in law’s jokes (I’d probably just say their names to avoid this whole thing, but this handy rule is nice to have up your sleeve.)

*For plural possession, make the noun plural first and then add the apostrophe. three girls’ shoes, two actresses’ parts, the Joneses’ cookies.

*Apostrophes do not belong in a plural name. Sabins, Atkinsons, Ramirezes

*Apostrophes have no place with possessive pronouns. his, hers, its, theirs, ours, whose

Except, you know, it’s if you’re talking about it is or it has…

*Plural letters and numbers used as nouns do not need apostrophes. She mixed up her 5s and 9s. ABCs, the 80s.

UNLESS, it is unclear without an apostrophe. Please dot your i’s. (otherwise it would look like is)

I’m sure I’ve forgotten something important here. Feel free to throw in your 2 cents, thoughts, feelings and grief on the subject. If you want to write about more than one of something, add an S. If you’re talking to parents, don’t you dare add an apostrophe! There is a time and place for everything and that is not it.

Summer Wish List

June 5, 2012

It happens around this time every year~ I get in that summer vacation frame of mind before it’s actually summer vacation. We still have a few days to go~ Friday is the kids’ last day of school. But for the last week and a half, you would have thought we were already on vacation. The kids have caught the vibe and want to stay up later, play harder, drink Coke (!)…we’ve missed the bus more than usual and we all have extra circles under our eyes.

But it’s worth it.

Here’s my Summer Wish List:

*READ

*WRITE

*TRAVEL

*LAUGH

*PLAY

*CUDDLE

That pretty much sums it up for me, folks. If I can do all of the above things in excess, I will be one happy woman.

What are your plans for the summer?

Happiness Is…

May 14, 2012

As a kid, I loved the Happiness Is…books by Charles Schulz. I still have Happiness is a Warm Puppy and my kids love the book too. Those Peanuts characters never cease to make us giggle.

Being grateful for everything changed my life a year or two ago. I always thought I was being grateful, but when I hit some snags and struggled with depression/life, I had to consciously make an effort to be grateful for EVERY LITTLE THING…find every ounce of the good. I have to say, this is what turned everything around for me.

A few things making me happy lately…

Happiness is…

A Scrabble (take a look at that vintage board~ at Nina’s Cafe~ I covet this!) date with my good-looking husband…

A sunny day with a soft breeze…

A cup of coffee with lots of cream…

Happiness is…

My new favorite mug that I painted at the pottery place with my friends, Carrie, Courtney and Nadine…

Let’s just take a moment to soak in its cuteness…OK, thanks. I’m ready to move on now.

Sleeping in until at least 8 AM…

This little lamb of goodness that I get to love on every Thursday morning…

And the fact that her mama says I’m her favorite…that ups the happiness…xo, Meredith.

Happiness is…

Cute new bookmarks (these too can make YOU happy~ heehee~ $5 each)

A vast supply of books to read…

Laughing so hard you look like a major dork…

(Tarryn couldn’t look like a dork if she tried+I made sure to cover that territory= True Friend)

Mexican Coke…

(Sweetened with real sugar vs. high fructose corn syrup)

Happiness is…

New lip gloss…

Realizing you’re not quite as klutzy as you thought~ the reason you spilled coffee down your dress Sunday morning, not once, but three times, was not actually your fault…

It was actually your formerly trusty mug betraying you with a leak under the lid…

Happiness is…

The fact that you were wearing a khaki linen dress when the three coffee spills happened and it just fit right in with the rest of the fabric once it dried!

The rain holding off until you’re done with the outdoor first grade field trip…

Happiness is…

Pink…

Pretty flowers…

Little boys who are worn out from all the fun…

A good teacher…

Happiness is…

A new library card…

All the books you can carry…

Roses showing up on the front porch from my dear friend, Savita…

Pink & Pretty Flowers makes the list again!

Happiness is…

Strawberry Shortcake Cake…

Oh my, yes. Yes, this cake brings true happiness.

Time with the girls at Tosha’s house…

You want to see more of those treats, don’t you…because you know happiness is…

This delicious egg concoction…

And this mouthwatering blueberry cake with a blueberry center…so pretty!

Being spoiled by my family on Mother’s Day…

Squeezes…

His “I Love My Mama” face…

Happiness is…

Knowing the reason I’m able to be a good mama…

On and on it goes…happiness is gratitude.

(2) The term “double ply” shall not register as a truth, but may or not be merely trickery to the consumer.

(3a) 20 sheets (i.e., Scott’s) versus 3 sheets (i.e., Charmin Ultra Soft)

(4) The term “using less” should be disregarded unless referring to Charmin Ultra Soft.

Back to Real Life

February 8, 2012

So, now what?

Getting back into the groove after our trip has taken some time. A few have checked to see if I’m in deep sadness after such a fabulous trip and then coming back home to winter…and you know, just the general feelings of letdown after you’ve been waiting for something for so long and then it’s over.

There has been a smidgeon of that, but mostly I feel rejuvenated. All that sun and fun put life back into me and I feel ready to face whatever is next.

So far, that has consisted of:

*Fighting a cold with all my might

*Losing the 6.5 pounds I gained on the cruise. Worth it. :)

*Helping the kids with their make-up work~ I think today will be the last of it!

*Catching up with friends

*Weeding out the gross~ this covers many areas of my life right now. I’m in a purging state of mind. So, watch out, junk drawers, candy stashes (Chocolate, don’t worry, you’re safe), paper piles, negativity, bad influences, flakes and creeps.

*Little sleep

*Giving in to watching the train wreck that sucks me in with its unbelievable horrificness~ yes, had to make a word up~ The Bachelor. Don’t even get me started on Courtney. This show somehow slipped past the radar of the gross. (see above)

*Baby love~ my friend, Krystal, had her baby while I was gone and I met her last night. She is perfection!

*Puppy love too~ Steve and Jill’s little love. I am fully smitten with Oliver!

*Birthday planning for my boy. Yesterday, he said it wasn’t looking much like a birthday around our house…no decorations, no cake…guess I’ve got some decorating and caking to do before tomorrow! You know I’ll be crying with my usual birthday sentimental blues, it just seems to come hand in hand with their birthdays.

*Trying to keep that Vacation frame of mind~ relaxed, happy, stress-free, calm and uncluttered. Easier said than done in real life, of course, but trying.

Road Trip List

August 23, 2011

Since we last visited together several days ago, I have…

Eaten so many sweets that I should probably not have any for another year

Said good-bye to my dear friend, Brenda, after a delightful visit

Made lots of jewelry

Felt so grateful for our church~ they unexpectedly gave us a love offering on Sunday, prayed for blessings on our trip and healing for my dad.

Done a LOT of singing

Read Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks (nice twist at the end!)

Been in the car for many, many hours

Visited our dear friends, Greg & Tonja and their family. We were in a band together…so many good memories, hilarious stories, and always fun music when we’re together.

Paid no attention to my computer/internet/emails

Played Scavenger Hunt on the road with the family…

The Scavenger List:

9 Eagles~ check

20 Herds of cows: check and then some

10 Red barns~ at least 13

10 Water towers~ at least 12

5 McDonald’s arches (the REAL thing, not just the billboard arches)~ 4 (we MUST have been distracted!!!)

100 Hay bails~ counted 135, but quit after that

3 Silos, concrete or stone only~ 5

3 Windmills~ 3

5 “Z’s”~ 4

3 policemen~ 4 (thank goodness, they didn’t pay as much attention to us as we did them!)

2 U-Hauls~ 0 (epic failure!)

4 yellow cars~ 6 (mostly all in Arkansas…hmm!)

NOT been able to talk the kids into counting road kill…Nate was game, but…

Consumed more junk

Felt like I was ALMOST on vacation…maybe in another few days, I’ll really feel that way

Tried to let worry go. Let it go, lay it down.

Felt like my hiney was stuck to the leather interior for GOOD

Thought we were never gonna get there

Laughed a lot

Spaced out a lot

Read a lot

Thought a lot

Noticed that Minnesota’s rare humidity this summer is still nothing compared to Arkansas’s

Felt excited to see my family

Arrived at Honey & Papa’s~ YAY!!!
