Yes. It’s another…

October 26, 2012

…ramble. Because that’s all my brain seems capable of these days. :)

Today with my boy, I’m Mama Llama. Mama Hippo, Mama Sheep and now, Mama Llama. I’ll take it. Have you ever noticed the eyelashes on those things?

Since I seem to be popping up on here to do random thoughts, I’ll throw some more out there…

I’m SO SORE. I wish I could say I’ve gotten my act together and started working out again (I haven’t), but no…it’s from squatting down to tape the corners of tablecloths on 17 or 18 tables/4 sides. Do the math. And then doing the stairs of the Science Museum in speedy motion~ 8th graders can be quick, yet sporadic, so you wanna keep moving~ a dozen times/double massive staircases for each floor. I want to groan like a creaky rocker with every step I take, every stair I go up or down, every time I sit OR stand, and in general, every time I breathe.

I need to work out.

Another mouse made an appearance. I am moving out of the country.

I shouldn’t be saying anything mouse-related because I have friends from California coming next week~ hello, Stephanie and Vanessa~ I promise to get this taken care of before you get here. Ahem. Correction. I’ll get Nate right on that…

My daughter’s play started last night and I missed opening night for the Jonathan Thulin CD release concert. It was such a fun night. It’s always amazing to me how a large group of people who don’t all know each other can come together with no practice and make some magical music happen. I think we rehearsed an hour all together~ not the whole list of songs~ and still managed to pull it off. Miraculous, I’d say.

You can listen and purchase his entire CD HERE: https://itunes.apple.com/us/album/the-white-room/id566780156

So tonight and tomorrow I will be able to enjoy Greyley’s show…can’t wait. Usually half the show is spent laughing at Indigo’s laughing. He gets such a kick out of these school productions.

I love nice people and making friends with people in unexpected places~ if you’re reading this Korey~ it made my day yesterday to meet you.

Have a fabulous weekend! I promise soon I’ll have less ramblings and more things of substance to say. Maybe.

Friends, Downton Abbey and Christmas

June 25, 2012

The past weekend was one of the best and busiest I’ve had in a long time…summer has taken off with a bang.

I FINALLY took action with my unruly yard. It’s sad~ my gardening skills have gotten worse over the years instead of better. I can’t tell you how many perennials I’ve tried in our garden beds. Sigh. My garden at my first house was so cute and colorful. Now I have a huge yard and it’s like pulling teeth to get things to flourish. We dug up a ton, moved things around…it was a family affair. One flower bed looks fantastic; the others still have to be finished. Any tips on VERY HARDY plants for zone 4?

Friday night, I spent time with my girls Courtney, Tosha and Halima…hang with just one of them and hilarity ensues, but put the four of us in a room together and it’s, well…I don’t even have a word for it. Suffice it to say, I am still laughing a few days later. I love these women and thank God for true friends.

My dear friend, Amy, from college days, was in town and we had breakfast Saturday morning. It has been far too long since I’ve seen her and oh my, what a treat. I will make sure I see her before another decade goes by! We reminisced for hours and it felt as if no time had passed. Another friend, Wendy, who I have known forever, but never really knew~ know what I mean? :) ~ she joined us and I am so glad I finally got to know her better.

We saw Brave~ did any of you see it yet? The red hair is mesmerizing!

Our two great nephews, Jordan and Caleb, graduated and had such a fun party on Saturday, complete with music from our nephews, Chris and Andrew. Take a look at our new great niece…isn’t she a beauty?

Yep, she’s dreamy.

And then after months and months of staying up way too late and waking up way too early, it caught up with me. I fell asleep on the couch at 7:30 P.M. Can you believe it? I dragged myself to bed around midnight and wonder of wonders~ I went back to sleep until 6:30 A.M.! I was a new woman, I tell you!

After church, we had a group of 9 or 10 record BGVs on a song for Jason Gray’s Christmas project. We tried to invoke the good cheer of Christmas in the heat of the studio and I think we might have managed to pull it off. I do love a day of singing in the studio. Even though it’s usually sweaty and sometimes crowded, your feet get tired and it can be a LONG day, good memories are always made.

Last night, we started watching the series Downton Abbey at Steve and Jill’s house. I’ve wanted to see this for a long time and it did not disappoint…I am hooked. I saw four episodes and I’m going to get after the rest in speedy fashion.

I feel that I sufficiently wrung out the goodness of the entire weekend as best I could. Now…on to a hopefully mellow week. I can only handle so much fun.

Madame Butterfly

April 15, 2012

The Minnesota Opera has been gaining huge popularity in the Twin Cities, especially this past year. It’s exciting to see the shows sell out and to know that when you go to the Opera, you’re going to see an exquisite show.

Michael Christie, the new music director for The Minnesota Opera, came over to Sakura before the show on Thursday night and spoke to us (bloggers) about the history of Madame Butterfly and a few behind-the-scenes details that were fun to hear firsthand. This time of frank discussion is very enlightening when you’re watching the production and can sometimes be my favorite part of the entire night. This was the case Thursday night. Mr. Christie’s enthusiasm is catching.

However, once the music began, I couldn’t shake the uneasiness~ maybe because I know how this sad story ends for Madame Butterfly. There are two casts for this show and we were fortunate to hear Kelly Kaduce as Madame Butterfly and Arturo Chacón-Cruz as Lieutenant B. F. Pinkerton. Ms. Kaduce was fantastic, both in her amazing vocal range and in portraying a young 15-year-old naive girl about to be married. Mr. Chacón-Cruz also had an incredible voice and played his part very well because I wanted to rip out every shred of hair on his perfectly coiffed head.

Lieutenant Pinkerton is a Class A Jerk.

In the happy times…

But joyful, lighthearted endings an Opera does not make…

I can’t go on about this one as much as I did with Silent Night~ I LOVED everything about that production. The Madame Butterfly sets were extremely stark, making the 2 hour and 45 minute run time more evident at times.  Musically speaking, there were really great moments, especially when Kaduce and Chacón-Cruz sang together, but I wished for more beautiful harmonies. However, this is how composer Giacomo Puccini envisioned it, and I do like that The Minnesota Opera remained true to Puccini’s vision.

All in all, any chance to go to the Opera is a wonderful experience and one that I highly recommend. Thank you, Daniel Zillman, for the opportunities this past year!

Debriefing

February 27, 2012

I’ve been missing you!

Here’s what has happened since we were last together…

Stomach flu and migraine in the house. 2 knocked down. 1 for a day, the other for 3 1/2.

Still de-cluttering like crazy. It’s getting there. My closet, part of Nate’s closet, the coat closet and the basement closet are all that’s left.

Packing up my brother’s house. This got seriously stalled due to the sick house.

And then finally, some happy excitement on Saturday night. Tosh and I had a late dinner and got caught up while we waited for Tarryn to get into town. It did my heart good, as always, to be with her. I’ve been excited for Tosha and Tarryn to meet~ they hit it off, of course. Only 18 hours with my dear friend, Tarryn Fisher. We filled in so much fun in that short amount of time. Very sad to see her go.

Heard our nephew in Minneapolis, Chris Lawrence…he’s home from American Idol and going to start a recording. Woohoo!

Excellent church with music by Rachael Lampa. The girl can SING. It was really great getting to know her a little…very funny and sweet.

Time with my Thulin friends~ Jonathan, Anna and David. Jonathan is the one who introduced us to Rachael. She’s singing on his new recording. You can find out more about that HERE and even be part of making it happen. :)

And then the Oscars…I enjoyed seeing the pretty clothes and Cirque du Soleil. It was the perfect thing to space out to after an exhausting week. As soon it was over, I passed out.

I’m still not awake.

Happy Monday! And Happy Birthday to my friend, Brenda. She brings sunshine to everyone she meets. xoxo

American Idol Magic

January 31, 2012

Vacation Chatter Continued…

If you’re just joining us, I’ve been out of town for 2 1/2 glorious weeks for a much needed VACATION! I’ll jump right in where we left off yesterday.

Day Two of our theme park visits in Orlando took us to Hollywood Studios. I think this might be our favorite of all the parks. We went there the 2nd and 5th day since we missed a lot on the first day.

We had good reason to miss a few things. Our son, Indigo became a Jedi. This was a very serious operation. They do not just get selected because they’re cute or talented or x, y, z. There is a very strict PROCESS to getting in the Jedi training. I felt very bad for the ones who were cut…but they’ve gotta do what they’ve gotta do. It’s Hollywood the real deal, right? So thankfully, he went through after a strenuous selection ordeal.

It was worth it. He did mighty things in a short amount of time, thanks to his instructor.

And you’re not going to believe this, but DARTH VADER ACTUALLY TRIED TO INVADE! That turkey showed up and wanted to overtake the whole park, but NO! My son, the Jedi, stopped that just in the nick of time!

It was touch and go for a while there, but I’m here to tell the story, so it’s clear that all ended well. Thanks be to God and Jedi Brave.

Greyley came in on the tail end of all this because while her brother was out saving the world, she was trying out for American Idol. We thought it would be a cute, little fun thing that wouldn’t last very long, but again~ those Hollywood Studios people are very serious about their work. She went through 2 rounds of auditions and out of 300 people who tried out, 25 were chosen to continue the competition. Greyley was one of the 25! The winner of the finals would get to the front of the line in a REAL American Idol audition, no expiration date.

She was told to come back in an hour to get in for hair and makeup, rehearsal and time with the vocal coach. Then she would be performing in the show later that afternoon. It was all very exciting.

To pass the time, we paused to get our photograph with the Contestant and then took in the Tower of Terror~ our favorite ride of all! That ride brings on a dire case of the giggles in all of us…once we get over the TERROR. Let’s ride it again!

And before we knew it, we were due backstage at the American Idol auditorium. I was Greyley’s “Manager” and we were in a small room with the other final two contestants performing in the show with Greyley. One contestant was a 33-year-old lady from Orlando~ total sweetheart~ who had her son as her manager~ he was a year younger than Greyley. And the other contestant was a 40-year-old man from London. He tries out for the show every time~ I’m not sure if he’s won the other times or not. They were both really good.

This nice girl from Atlanta did Greyley’s hair and makeup. I was instructed to not take any video and only pictures before the show, not during. Boohoo.

And then she met the very nice vocal coach, who gave her some great tips. She had to practice the song a few times~ she chose the songs when she tried out and then they gave her a small list of songs to sing in the show. She chose This Is Me by Demi Lovato.

After this, they ushered me into the auditorium, got me settled into the reserved seating close to the front and gave me my small list of rules. Before people started piling in, I was able to sneak this picture from my seat and then no more…

I put this picture on Facebook right before she went onstage and didn’t expect the reaction that came from it. I thought anyone who saw it would also see that we were at Hollywood Studios/Florida style that day, not HOLLYWOOD Hollywood. And Greyley’s too young for the other one anyway…

I got a pile of messages and texts and emails wanting to know when she’d be on TV, etc…and since I was on vacation, I didn’t get them all or have a chance to even look. So I apologize for leaving any of you hanging…teehee.

However…here’s another little glimpse. :)

She did a fabulous job. She really did. I know you think I’m just saying that because I’m her mother, but it’s the truth. The crowd began cheering when she got to the chorus. We all got teary. It was such fun.

The judges loved her.

I couldn’t tell you who the judges were, but they looked familiar…in that Hollywood Studios sort of way. The one on the far right was the token “Simon” and he was the only one who didn’t rave. He didn’t rave about anyone or anything, though.

The host was really nice~ he interviewed her at the beginning and talked to all of them throughout the show. He had really sweet and helpful things to say to Greyley even after the show. I appreciate these extra kindnesses. They go a long way with me, especially when they involve my children.

The audience voted~ there were buttons attached to the chairs for each contestant. The other contestants’ family members were sitting close to us.

Tension mounts.

Vote for 1, 1, 1!

And the next American Idol…

IS…

The 33-year-old Mama from Orlando!

No picture of her win, sorry. :) She really was great and so very sweet. She said she was rooting for Greyley all they way, which absolutely made Greyley’s day.

The whole experience was a blast, from beginning to end.

*Fun fact, our nephew, Chris Lawrence, tried out for the REAL American Idol. He went to Hollywood last year, but got cut. This year, he hasn’t been telling us the outcome, but I’m 99% certain he made it to Hollywood again. Watch for him! As I’m typing this, they’re interviewing him on our local Fox news show. YES, it is confirmed that he has a golden ticket! Woohoo! Craziness! How I would love to see him in the top 10!

The fun continues tomorrow. Stay tuned! XO

Fun, Flutes and Alvin

December 9, 2011

If you need something delightful and Christmas-y to do today, head on over to the Mall of America at 1:45 and hear my daughter play in a fantastic flute choir. Don’t I sound like a mother? It’s true, though, it will be fantastic. She is SO excited about it.

My girl will be the one in the red Alvin sweatshirt and stocking hat. Yes, any ABCYC members, THAT red Alvin sweatshirt~ if any of you have one you’d like to get rid of, we’ll take them! ;) We sang there one year with Jesse McCartney for the opening of Alvin & the Chipmunks~ all the girls were thrilled and all the guys were cringing with embarrassment. I have fond memories of that, especially the cringing…good times/free movie.

I’ll be (one) of the proud mamas shooting pictures and video at the same time.

While I’m talking about how proud I am of my daughter~ I can do that once in a while, right? Ahem~ let me show you what she’s been working on at school…

Have I ever mentioned she is a true fan of Stevie Wonder? She knows every word to every song…every lick…it’s awesome.

Then she came home and whipped this one up…truly. She’s on a Stevie roll.

Fun, right? She gives us lots of reasons to work on our pride.

Silent Night

November 13, 2011

Last Thursday night, I had the honor of attending Minnesota Opera’s world premiere, Silent Night. While I’ve enjoyed the opera before, this particular opera took me to whole new level of appreciation for the art.

Silent Night is based on the 2005 French film Joyeux Noel, a depiction of the true story of The French, Scottish and Germans having a night of peace on Christmas Eve in 1914. I couldn’t imagine how the story would be anything but heavy and dark~ and there were definitely heartbreaking moments~ but there was humor sprinkled throughout the story, as well as themes of honor, integrity, goodwill and true love.

The music is written by Kevin Puts and the librettist is Mark Campbell. They spoke to us (over  sushi appetizers at Sakura~ thank you!) and I was impressed by their passion for the music. It was a huge ensemble, with the 67-piece orchestra and a large, predominantly male cast. Conductor, Michael Christie (Wuthering Heights) was back in full form. Between you and me, I solemnly confess that I am now a full-fledged fan of these three men…

When I saw the stage, I knew I was in for something special…it was a magnificent rock structure that revolved and changed into different sets before our eyes. (Set designer: Francis O’Connor)

There were many exceptional voices. I especially enjoyed the lighthearted banter between these two~ Andrew Wilkowske as Ponchel and Liam Bonner as Lieutenant Audebert…

But this guy…Oh My Word…his voice took my breath away. First of all, in a chorus of men, with a variety of melodies going at once, it was beautiful, but hard to distinguish some voices from the others. However, every time tenor William Burden sang, his voice rang out crystal clear. He has an absolutely gorgeous voice.

I was also amazed by Karin Wolverton. As one of only a few women in the cast and the female lead, she had to have a commanding presence to be heard and she more than filled these shoes. Her piece at the end of Act 1 is simply stunning.

Her outfit is pretty great too, right? (Costume Designer: Kärin Kopischke)

It seems I cannot say enough good things about the night. I am not exaggerating~ it far surpassed any opera I’ve been to thus far.

For all of you Girly Muse readers, there is a significant coupon (again, thank you, fine Minnesota Opera folks!) to attend Silent Night this Tuesday, the 15th. Details are as follows:

Limit up to 4 seats regularly priced $50- $110. Online: Enter blog20 and click “Add Coupon”. You will see your savings applied. Do not complete order if coupon does not load. Beatrice, Oh Beatrice

November 10, 2011

I’m at The Library today.

Remember? Where I fell in love with Beatrice, the B3?

That was back when I had more hair and less phone…and less weight, now that you mention it!

Ahhh, Beatrice. She is so much more dependable and delightful than Ethel, who I have to coerce, threaten and cajole to get her to not complain and just play every Sunday morning.

We’re going to be recording today and tomorrow. Send up some prayers that the music magical goodness will flow and we will get it done excellently and speedily.

Embarrassing Musicianship

September 15, 2011

I’ve been playing music in one fashion or another for 3+ decades. Yes, I am ancient. But with old age, comes some FUNNY stories.

I never fail to be amused by the different musician types that come our way. Don’t be offended by the word “amused” if you are said musician…I love to be amused.

Amusement is the highest form of flattery.

Isn’t there a saying that goes something like that?

As a teen, playing the piano at church, I worked with a variety of people with as many varying levels of talent as there are flavors in the Jelly Belly Beans box.

My pastor’s wife would have me sing solos at the drop of the hat. I learned to be Johnny On the Spot, Instant In Season and Lori Levelhead.

I played with whoever the incoming evangelist was for that week~ to be an evangelist, you have to sing, whether you can stay in the same key as the piano player or not.

One lady asked me to “fade” the ending…because that’s what they did on the recording.

I can’t tell you the number of people who have decided to start singing before deciding on a key. It’s not so hard to find the key…if they’re singing in one.

And then there’s working with young people and hearing them try out for a choir solo when they really should only be singing in a Very Large Group of People.

The only way to deal with it is to blink very slowly and pray that giggles will not overtake your body.

The embarrassment has not always been at the expense of others, oh no…it is usually my own mistakes that flood me with a red face and splotches. I am not all that, have never professed to be, and never will be. I play and sing decently, but am FAR from perfect. Very Far. So Very Far.

It’s why I like singing in the studio the very best~ I can mess up and it can be erased. Hallelujah. Or if it DOES make the cut, it can be placed Very Far Back in the Mix. That’s always another clear sign of You Are NOT As Good As You Think You Are.

Probably one of the most embarrassing times in my playing career happened last June. I was in Dallas and was with a group of friends, hearing a great singer that I enjoy going to see when I’m in town. Little did I know, but during the intermission, my friend, Allen, told the singer that I played the B3. I talked to the singer during intermission too~ she’s very nice, loved my jewelry and wanted to sell it in her store…hey, by the way, if you’re reading this, Beautiful Singer, did you change your mind??? It’s not too late! But, I digress…

Anyhoo, the music starts back up and I’m enjoying the band and Maylee’s powerful singing…yes, her name is Maylee and if you’re ever in Dallas, you should go hear her…when all of a sudden she shouts, “Come on up here, Lori Sabeen!”

I shook my head, thinking, Did I just hear her say Lori Something?

She’s pointing at me and I’m turning around to see who she’s looking at…where is this Lori person?

When I realize she’s pointing at me, my heart drops and I go red. Because that’s just what I do.

Remember, I did not know Mr. Allen had told Ms. Maylee that I play.

I finally get up on the stage BECAUSE SHE IS NOT LETTING ME OUT OF IT and she points for me to hit the organ and GO. Problem is, the guy already on the organ did not get that memo, so he is not moving. When he finally looks up, I say, “She’s wanting me to play.” Or something else equally dumb and he slowly gets off.

I see his pinky on a G and so I sit down and try to hear the keyboard. I can’t~ the drums and guitar are super loud. Then they look at me and Maylee yells, “LORI SABEEEEEEN!”

Clearly, it was too loud to hear anything correctly, since she kept saying my name wrong. (No offense, Maylee. I have to grasp at any excuse here. Bear with me.)

So I do a solo and play the daylights out of that keyboard in the key of C minor. For all of you who know me, you know my LOVE FOR ALL THINGS SOLO. HA! I so despise soloing. I will NOT have to solo in heaven. There’s just no way God would do that to me. But for Maylee, I go for it. Oftentimes for Nate and the ABC Youth Choir, I will also go for it, but never do I LIKE it. However, on this night, I decide to play my little heart out. For a moment, I think, I might be rockin’ this right now!!! This is going well, this is going well. Part of it sounds super cool. Part of it sounds…well, just wrong, somehow. We play that song to pieces and it is so fun. Maylee comes over and sings and plays with me, throwing in a chord or two of her own…does the hair shake thing she does. It’s a blast.

Afterward, the guitar husband has no words for me. He doesn’t fully look me in the eye. He knows something that has not hit me yet.

Maylee is kind and says I rocked, but I think she would be that way to an ox. She is a super nice person.

The audience has great things to say.

The keyboard player: Nada.

My friend, Joey, had no IDEA that I could play, so he’s all excited.

Allen says, “You did good. Sounded like some fancy jazz…”

That should have left me wondering right there…and it did. Because that night, I had the weirdest dream. In my dream, all I see is Maylee’s hand on the keyboard and my hands on the keyboard. She is playing a G minor chord. I am playing a C minor chord.

I wake up in a sweat. I can’t go back to sleep.

It all makes sense now.

I PLAYED THE WHOLE SONG IN THE WRONG KEY.

I officially have no more credibility as a musician.

I can be amused all day long by others and their lack or even by their wealth of song ideas and musicianship…but I PLAYED THE WHOLE DOGGONE SONG IN THE WRONG KEY.

I laughed so hard I cried.

I tried to reason with myself that at least there are common notes in C minor and G minor…but the reassurance rang hollow.

Allen called Maylee and she had a good laugh. She “says” she didn’t realize it.

However, she has yet to follow up about the necklaces. I wouldn’t be surprised if she never wanted to hear Lori Sabeeen again…anyone who would play her song in the wrong key has got to leave a bad taste in her mouth.

I don’t want your stinkeeng necklaces! She’s probably saying.

Maylee! I promise! Next time I will play in the right key…truly…I promise.

Oh goodness. It makes me splotch all over again. I should have been a car saleswoman.

Good Friday

April 22, 2011

Happy Good Friday!

It is gloomy, overcast and chilly outside, but inside there are cuddles, warm blankets and cartoons galore. We are still in nursing mode over here.

Our little man gave us a good scare a couple nights ago. He got pretty congested, which for him means worse asthma. Sure enough, he had an asthma attack that was more severe than usual. The worst he’s ever had, actually. Oh man, it was scary. We called 911 and were in the hospital for a few hours that night as they got his breathing more regulated.

We’re following up today with a visit to our favorite pulmonologist in the world, Dr. Kubik. I don’t like the conditions, but cannot wait to see him. He played a part in saving our boy’s life when he was a baby and I will forever be grateful. It’s been a joy to see him throughout the last 6 years and hear him recount the miracle that happened for Indigo.

Days like this when it’s dark, not just outside, but rough stuff…you know the kind…sickness, scary situations, dark days…I am reminded of the way, over 2000 years ago, Jesus took it all on himself…for me. For this day, far into the future, when I’m struggling and trying to keep it all together. When I question if things are ever going to get better…when I wonder if God took a break from me…

I’m reminded that He already took care of it all~ all my fear, grief, sickness, pain, sin…and not just for me, but for my family, for my friends, for the whole world…it’s taken care of. And while a little bump in the road might be hard, it’s nothing compared to the price He paid, the pain He endured, the stripes that He suffered.

I believe, help my unbelief.

Good Friday is only good because of what happened a couple days later. He rose, He lives…and THAT is why life is worth living.

Click the link below to hear Deborah McKee and Ashleigh Still sing with the ABC Youth Choir, “You are Mercy.” It’s the right song for today.
