Aunt Virginia & Justin Bieber

July 29, 2010

This lovely lady is one of the sweetest, most positive, and loving people I know…my Great-Aunt Virginia…

She was married to my grandfather’s brother~ Uncle Charles~ for 60 3/4 years…that’s how she says it. They pastored for many years and after that, she worked in a daycare up until a couple years ago. She’s 85. Isn’t she a doll?

To know her is to love her. It just makes you feel good to be around her. I love people like that.

When we left her house, we got stuck in a traffic jam. There was a Justin Bieber concert in Little Rock, of all things. It took QUITE a while to get through the cars of primping adolescent girls with their eye-rolling mothers. Bieber fever, indeed.

Our evening was spent at home. The kids made Dandy Dogs (corn dogs) with Papa…so fun and SO good!

Hard at work…

Look at those beauties…hold on a minute….what was…that?

Let’s just say Indie stepped on a loose board…shot the bunny…you can fill in the blank…

Never a dull moment.

The Road to Hana

July 28, 2010

JUST kidding…

But if you close your eyes while you’re going through the Ozarks and open them REALLY fast and then squint your eyes into TINY slits…you can ALMOST imagine an ocean when you’re going around the curves. Almost. Well, not quite. You should just try it sometime.

We got to Arkansas Monday night and this was us within the hour…

Photograph Courtesy of the Greyley Kate

We are just the barrel of laughs and good times. You should invite us to your next party, you really should.

I got online to write on here Tuesday morning and download my pictures, which is when I found the picture above (Sneaky Daughter!), but realized that I could not download even one more picture. NOT EVEN ONE. I’ve told you about my computer ineptness. Is that a word? But maybe this drives that point home just a little more~ there was not an ounce of space left on my computer.

I have a cluttered closet. I have a cluttered computer.

Is there CA for that? Clutterers Anonymous?

There really should be. I would be in it. Anonymously, of course.

Here’s a little story for you…my dad has worked at Wal-mart~ the night shift~ for the last year plus…well, HE GOT A NEW JOB!!! A great job. We are so excited. It is an answer to MANY prayers. After having 2 back surgeries, the last thing he needed was to stand on his feet all night, working at Wal-mart. It has caused many problems with his back and leg, not to mention he has never been a night person. He has always been an exceptional businessman, but all doors were closed to him…and he tried many a door. We are thrilled that he will have this job with a boss that we trust. (Thanks for ALL your prayers!)

So…last night before his 10 PM shift, we took a family trip to Wal-mart to take advantage of the 10% off that he will only get for a few more days…

Oh, I could say SO many things here. See me holding my tongue?

Can I just tell you ONE thing? There are weird people that go to Wal-mart in a small town in Arkansas late at night. I saw some sights, that’s all I’ll say.

Granted, I was there, too, with my little family, so…I guess I can’t say much…

Indigo loves Papa’s work…

Anyway…got a new hard drive. Glory be. I am in business again. Will get back on the picture~taking bandwagon.

Calling all 50+ women~ Is this a new fashion where you are~ SHORT, SHORT jean shorts…belted?

Just wondering.

I’ve already seen my grandparents (Dad’s parents) and my beloved Aunt NeNe (Mama’s sister). My mama’s been cooking up a storm. Today was my favorite meal~ pork chops, purple hull peas, cornbread muffins (Honey added “something” that made them EXTRA good!!!), fried corn (Oh, it’s so good, I want it served at my funeral!), fresh peach cobbler…and with every meal~ Grandma’s tomatoes. So very good.

Wish you were here. We’d feed you good and then fall asleep on ya.

Recap & Road Trip

July 26, 2010

Guess what? By the time you read this, we will (hopefully) be well on our way to Arkansas. The four of us are going to see my parents…a ROAD TRIP! Weehaw!

Say a prayer for us. It’s a long way. We’ve had a CRAZY weekend. I’m sleepy already, just thinking about it. But we’re excited. I have a little boy here who has been counting the days…just three more sleeps, two more sleeps, one more sleep!!!

A couple highlights of the weekend:

* Hearing our singers and band members speak from their heart during our workshop. I am so proud of them~ their talent, humility, loving hearts, and desire to know God. I love each one of them very much.

* Singing with Nate & Debbie on a stage overlooking a huge lake

* The best Mexican food I’ve had in a long time (a restaurant in the Albert Lea mall!)

* Nate preached at our church on Sunday morning~ yes, he did. And it was SO GOOD! Will have to tell you the details sometime…or better yet, have him tell you.

* Greyley’s music teacher (K-5) came to our outdoor concert last night. She saw that we were going to be there and gave us a nice surprise. She’s a very special lady…

The lowlights of the weekend were minimal, I suppose. I’ll refrain from mentioning any here, EXCEPT for the fact that I MISSED my kids especially much. I saw them in spurts here and there, but it just wasn’t nearly enough. There are times when I’m all for a little time away…I think the kids can use space from me, too, every once in a while…but this weekend was not one of them for me. However, they had lots of fun and I think they actually missed me too, which was really nice.

I’m really looking forward to getting some rest, relaxation and sweet time with my family…guess I better go to sleep so I can wake up when the time comes…it will be here before I know it.

Have a Monday Funday.

Chocolate Covered Mouse

July 23, 2010

Nama had a mouse last night.

I had some stress going on yesterday. A lot of it.

It made me want to eat. A lot. So I did.

Now, this mouse…normally, I would have had full body shivers and would imagine a mouse behind every corner. However, when I saw the little bitty baby mouse, I had an “Aw” moment and wished I could go hug my dog.

I know. I’m pitiful.

I miss my dog every day. Lots and lots (I’m going with the word “lots” today, forgive me) of times all during the day and especially at night. I either grieve for him or think he’s just going to sidle up by me any minute and rub against my arm. When he doesn’t, I’m reminded that he’s gone and I feel very, very sad.

And apparently, more stressed.

Little did I know that when I’m having a week like this one, with a crazy weekend coming up like this one…that sitting down and holding him a while works wonders for me.

Now I know.

And all I want to do is eat.

Before you get any ideas, no…I DON’T want another dog. I just want Alex. And pizza. A chocolate malt. A cheeseburger with bleu cheese. Chocolate cake. Chocolate pie.

Something…chocolate-y…

Need Something To Do?

July 22, 2010

There are some fun things going on this weekend…if you live in Minnesota, come on out.

Nate has been writing up a storm. The songs are just pouring out of him these days. They are AWESOME songs! He’s also got some great things to say about worship. A small team from our church has been going out and doing “Catch the Wind” workshops~ a concert the first night and then breaking out into workshops the next day. It’s been a lot of fun. We’ve met some great people.

Tomorrow night~ Friday (6:30PM-8:30PM), we will be doing a concert at Lighthouse Christian Church on 3285 144th St W. in Rosemount, MN.

Saturday (9AM-2PM), we will have a workshop that is specifically targeted for worship leaders, bands and singers…same location as Friday night.

Sunday (6PM), the ABC Youth Choir will be singing in the Gospel band shell in Rosemount/Central Park on 2893 145th Street West, Rosemount, MN 55068.

For any of you in the Albert Lea area…our band is playing with Elisha Marin on Saturday night, yes, I backtracked with the days :) …at 6 PM, opening for Bluetree. Come on out, it will be a great night.

Baseball and Such

July 21, 2010

I did an all-American thing last night. I went to a Twins baseball game.

It was delightful.

I’ll just confess that when my dear friend, Courtney, called yesterday afternoon with an available ticket, I wasn’t jumping up and down to go. I had lots to do and needed to go to choir practice to get ready for a big weekend. I knew it would be so fun to hang out with her, but told her that she should share the ticket with someone who appreciates the sports thing.

She quoted words to my own song, which can be a problem with putting your thoughts, words, songs out there…

“Shake it off and live a little…” she says…

Hmph.

But I did and I’m so very glad.

I went and loved it. Every single thing about it.

It was a GORGEOUS night. We had amazing seats. The only bummer of the night is that we lost by a point…or run…or whatever the correct terminology is for that.

The night started out right, with J.D. Steele singing The Star Spangled Banner.

His brother, Billy, is one of my favorite people on earth. Billy sang “When I Fall in Love” and “Always” at my wedding…but that’s a whole other story.

Look, there’s some stretching going on RIGHT THERE!

Guess what? Courtney’s mom, Pat, won Twingo. (Free ticket to IMAX!) Hello, Miss Twingo!

Pat’s dad and brother played baseball for years, so she is a true fan. She helped me know when to cheer. Thanks, Pat.

And let’s not forget Bob. He is too fun and so sweet.

There were many, MANY laughs (as there always are) with me and Court. We can make each other laugh until we cry and our bellies hurt…OK, there might be some wheezing involved too…

It was great and I needed it in a big way. Thanks so much for the wonderful night. XO

Birthdays, Mud & Butter, not necessarily in that order

July 19, 2010

Good morning, world.

I hope your weekend was delightful. We had a full, fun weekend. A little work, but mostly play. Yesterday we celebrated Asher’s birthday. Asher belongs to our dear friends, Matt & Tosha, who get mentioned on here a lot…because, well, they’re good.

Take a long look at that cake. Only it’s not cake, it’s CUPcakes and there is 2 inches of frosting on those puppies. It was insane. I confess that I had one and did not wipe ANY frosting off.

Someone mistakenly thought it was this doll baby’s birthday. I won’t mention any names, but it rhymes with Beanie. That baby didn’t mind, did you, sweet thing…

Then…I don’t know WHO the crazy parents must be to ALLOW such a thing…but things took a turn for the yucky.

It was such a fun day. We’ve turned into quite the crew when we all get together now. As I sat, trying to tune out the screaming going on around me (it’s also loud when we’re all together!) to have a “moment” I looked around and thought about how we’re all grown up now. I remember when each of us got married, how our time together used to be so different (and a lot quieter)…but now our children are friends. It’s really amazing and wonderful when you stop and think about it.

Five couples now equals about 25 people.

Sniff…but anyway…

THIS is what I really wanted to talk about…

OH, BABY.

This is Habanero Mango Garlic Butter and you want to go on over to Matt’s blog right now and get the recipe. Trust me, you do.

I had about 4 ears of corn and COVERED it with this butter. OH MY WORD. It is so good. I think I dreamed about it. Go on, you know you want to try it.

Thanks, M&T, for the great party! Next time we’ll stay longer. I’m kidding, I’m kidding. Love, love.

Now That He’s Gone…

July 16, 2010

Thank you so much for all your comforting words about Alex. It really did help~ I have felt the love and prayers. We have been a melancholy bunch over here, but have had some laughs too, remembering the crazy quirks that were Alex.

A few things will be different now…

We can eat eggs in peace. Anyone who has been at our house when we eat eggs knows that gentle, sweet Alex became persistent and manipulative when eggs came into the picture.

We can now leave all the doors open if we want~ no, the Kleenex will not get chewed, the candy in the purse will not be found, he will not run out of our bedroom in the middle of the night to chase a sound…

The going to bed routine is reduced…there is no waiting for Alex to quit chasing the bunnies outside or waiting for him to finish eating his bedtime snack…

Indigo sat a plate down on the couch last night and said, “Don’t let Alex get my food…” and then realized mid-sentence that Alex wasn’t here anymore…

My dust ruffle will stay nice. It will not be rubbed to nubbins…

The throws will stay clean longer.

The kitchen will have space where his food was kept.

Crumbs will stay on the floor until I actually sweep them up.

Gum, toothpaste and dental floss will be safe.

Garbage cans can go outside the cabinet now.

I’m sure everything will smell better.

Of course, none of that matters now that I am missing my pup. The loss really has been profound this week. I know not everyone understands. A friend teased me a little yesterday and I realized once again that I might feel things a little more than others, in certain areas…and I must say, I haven’t felt this way about EVERY dog I’ve had. But I know there are people out there who have, like me, experienced that one of a kind devotion with a pet. Those of you who have had that know it’s like losing a part of your family.

Thank you for listening and caring, whether you “get it” or not…I just appreciate you being here, one way or the other.

Now…go hug your dog! :) XO

Alex (2/26/97~7/13/10)

July 14, 2010

I lost my boy yesterday, my Alex.

This little guy who was named after our plumber~ Alexander Webster “Poochkin” Sabin~ stole our hearts the moment we laid eyes on him.

For over thirteen years, he has been by my side.

He’s been with me through five pregnancies, laid on my belly as it grows, licked my tears when I lost three babies, welcomed the two babies we brought home…

Every time I have (EVER) sat on the couch, he has come to keep me company.

He has let the kids pull his hair, yell in his ears and endured an occasional flying drumstick…and remote control…and toy cars…and Barbies…

He has put up with countless strangers coming through, endless animals making themselves at home in his house and chased off many a postman.

He’s put up with all sorts of costume changes, reindeer ears and the like…

He made Nate, who never really wanted a dog in the first place, fall in love…so much so, that Nate has moved heaven and earth to take care of his boy.

I think it might have been the time when Alex was a puppy and he was choking in our car~ his leash was caught on the bar underneath the seat and Nate saved his little life. Alex was eternally grateful. There are many other such stories. They had a good thing going…

We thought we were going to lose him back in April. We had a precious week where we took pictures with him…

and tried to say our good-byes…

Then he perked up and we were able to get another three months with him.

I’m so glad for that extra time.

He was peaceful and it is comforting to know that he’s not suffering anymore. He was such a tough little guy. He never cried or complained, but it became more and more obvious that he was in a lot of pain. I’m glad to know that he’s not hurting now.

But I sure do miss him already.

I hope where you are has lots of trees to discover, all the eggs you can eat and a soft lap that makes you think of me.

Summer Musings

July 13, 2010

I’ve been too busy for my own good this summer. When I get overwhelmed and worn out with it how crazy the summer is going, I think about this time last summer…I was feeling so awful with Lyme’s Disease. It helps put it in perspective. Any tired feeling I have cannot compare to how that felt. Whew. So very thankful to have that past me.

That being said, I am ready for things to slow down just a bit here. It has been FUN, don’t get me wrong…

Got two younguns from the youth choir married off this weekend. It was a gorgeous wedding for Tara and Nate. They planned it so well and everything was beautiful. Was able to spend time the last few days with a slew of people I haven’t been able to see enough lately…that’s been really nice. Doing a little work here and there on a few projects…a little this, a little that.

We blew up a BUCKETLOAD of fireworks last night. The finale was called “One UNBELIEVABLE Fountain” and it was a large box filled with fireworks that you light all at once. Unbelievable is what it was…we sat there with our mouths hanging open.

My dog, Alex, has been sick again, so I’ve spent time keeping a close eye on him, taking him to the vet, giving him special food, cleaning up after him. :( No fun. He seemed to perk up a little bit last night. I’m hoping for a turnaround in the next few days. He shocked us a few months ago, which is wonderful, but now it’s even harder to know what to expect out of him…

My camera charger arrived in the mail yesterday, so I will be up and running again with pictures. Yeehaw! I cannot tell you how much I’ve missed my camera.

I haven’t caught up on last night’s Bachelorette. What do you think? Should I watch? Was it entertaining?

I so enjoyed my mom and dad’s posts on marriage. There are so many tidbits in there that I’ve read them both several times and something different stands out each time. Thank for sharing that with us, Max & Tomas. Now, go write your book! ASAP!

I’ve decided to condense my To-Do List this week. It’s going to be simple:

Read, Nap, Clean, Sleep

I like the sound of that…what are YOU into these days?
