Last Week of December

December 30, 2011

Happy last week of December! I hope you’re all enjoying the holidays. Christmas has come and gone and now there is the feeling of Newness in the air. For now, though, I’d like to recap on the past week.

Last Friday, our Youth Choir Christmas concert was so much fun. It was bittersweet because our fearless choir director, Steve, is being promoted to Media Director at our church. He has been part of the Youth Choir for 20 years and will be desperately missed. Thankfully, he is not going anywhere, really…we will all still be working together. AND…we are so excited for all the great things he’s about to do.

I love this picture of Steve and Jillie Bean.

Sweet moments…

me & Mari xo

Look at this firecracker winking at me.

I’m crazy about this girl.

We all are.

Pretty girls~ Mari, Kelexus & Celsy

Fun, fun night. It always is.

If you haven’t heard, we still don’t have snow. We had a brown Christmas. And I was completely OK with it! I just cannot bring myself to wish for snow. It’s been so mild and I know it’s bound to hit eventually.

This is my son’s idea of winter wear.

It broke his heart for me to tell him the shorts weren’t fit for the cold.

He won.

What? It was in the upper 30s!

Christmas was wonderful. My late sleeper, Greyley Kate, woke up bright and early. We waited for the little man to wake up and it didn’t take too long.

Here are the two lovebirds waiting to go downstairs…

And the Silly Sabins in their Matchy-Match Jammies

Indigo LOVED Greyley’s present to him

This was my present from Indie:

All day long the kids said, “This is the best Christmas EVER!” And it really was. We gave them stockings and then surprised them with an Air Hockey table. (We found the Air Hockey table at Goodwill~ what a FIND!) They played together all day and are still hooked on the game.

The next day, the family came over…we had an Italian Christmas. DELICIOUS. It just might be my favorite…although I really enjoyed Mexican Christmas and Greek Christmas too…no, Italian Christmas was the winner, pretty sure of it.

Take a look at this sweet and gorgeous family…

love

One of the best, most relaxing, fun Christmases I can remember…

The next night, we had a party for Steve…also Italian themed. :)

And then the next day, I crashed…after I took down the Christmas decorations.

This weekend has more fun in store…

I am looking forward to 2012. The year 2011 was a challenging one, to say the least. I am excited to bring in a new year. I will see you then! XO

Christmas Cheer

December 23, 2011

Today is the beginning of our Christmas break. Woohooooo! It was so nice to have a leisurely morning…made it feel like Christmas really is around the corner.

Tonight is the ABCYC Christmas concert…always my favorite concert of the year. (7 PM, 1545 Dieter Street, St. Paul 55106)

Here’s an oldie, but goodie. Jesus, You’re Beautiful~ written by my husband and featuring Ashleigh Still…

Brrrraces

December 22, 2011

It was a monumental day.

Look how excited she is!

She maintained that smile throughout…

And here she is!

Awww. So cute.

Is it wrong that I want to call her my little Brace Face?

The very best part of her day was hearing the orthodontist tell us to stock up on ice cream. We did NOT see that coming. I think that might have convinced her that braces are the greatest thing EVER!

Until before bed, when the soreness kicked up a few notches…here’s hoping that the pain is minimal and that these braces do the trick. They’ve said it might even help lessen the migraines! Oh, please Lord, let it be!

Ashley Love

December 20, 2011

We received the best gift ever~ our dear friend, Ashley Tiffany, surprised us all and was able to come HOME for the holidays! She’s been in the Peace Corps, serving in Africa, for the past year. Just a couple of weeks ago, we Skyped her and she was talking about how hard it was to be away during the holidays, knowing full well that she was coming HOME in just a couple weeks. Ha! Little Trickster, that’s what!

First, she surprised Courtney at work. Then she surprised her family in Wisconsin~ they thought they’d seen a ghost! Fortunately, she came back through the Twin Cities and we were able to see her too. We had such a wonderful time catching up. She is doing amazing things over there. It is one thing to say you want to make a difference; it is another to actually DO IT. She’s doing it and we could not be more proud to know this woman and call her our dear friend.

Ashley, me, Nadine and Courtney

It’s hard to let her go~ it has been all along, but knowing she is really fulfilling her calling helps. She needs to write a book filled with all her experiences. I’m going to stay after her to do that…

Courtney, Ashley, me & Nadine

Thanks for capturing our smiles, Nate. :)

We’re teasing Ashley about being The Hot Humanitarian. Nadine named her that and it has stuck…I think it fits her to a T.

Our prayers are with you, Ashley. And feel free to surprise us again WHENEVER possible. It was SO good to see you. XO

Being Known

December 19, 2011

I was scratching my son’s back the other night and when I reached that certain spot…that one spot that I know…his back arched and he giggled.

“That tickles,” he snorted.

I continued to rub the top of his back and then would sneak up on his ticklish spot, you know, so it would tickle extra much when I reached it…

We continued this for a while and I told him about how I found that spot when he was just born. We were in the ICU with him. We were only allowed to be in there for a limited time. My heart broke not having my baby with me. We’d been together for nine months, how could we be apart now?

He was on his stomach this visit. The oxygen mask was still over his face. He was brand new, not even a day old yet. It was all very scary. I never dreamed it would be this way. He was already my Miracle Baby. I thought the mere fact that he’d been born meant everything would be OK.

I put my hand on his tiny naked back.

I hit the spot.

His ticklish spot.

His back arched, his vitals dropped and they told me not to touch him.

My heart broke again. But I learned.

I learned that if I just put my hand, very slowly onto his back and held very still, it would comfort him. He would know my touch and my voice and it would actually make his numbers hum upwards into the safe range.

I made sure to only do that while he was in such dire straits.

But as soon as I knew he was well…

I went back to that ticklish spot…that hollow in his back that makes him giggle with glee. I know where it is and he knows that I know.

Now he says, “Do it again, Mama, do it again!”

And I am happy to oblige.

Masterpiece

December 16, 2011

My little man was the Gingerbread Man in his classroom play.  So cute.

They all did a great job.

Then the REAL fun began~ making gingerbread houses! Or should I say, graham cracker houses? We both came home covered with frosting and smelling like a candy factory. It was hard to not eat all the decorations…

Some masterpieces CAN be created in one afternoon!

Such fun…

We’ll see how long the house survives before being eaten, one Red Hot at a time…

Have a great weekend! XO

Consequence Schmonsequence

December 15, 2011

Oh No.... Pictures, Images and Photos

photobucket

Consequences can be a nasty beast.

*Have you ever gotten the urge to use British slang and then discover what those words really mean? Case in point: bloody, bugger, sod off. Please don’t look them up. It will ruin everything.

We’re dealing with them over here…consequences, that is…not British slang. I’m probably the only one who hears British cuss words in my head, due to reading too much English literature…and you know, every other book I can get my hands on.

I’ve never had a bloke tell me off before.

However, I probably wouldn’t mind…because everything sounds lovely in a British accent.

But ANYWAY…back to consequences…

I hate them. It’s one thing to have to deal with my own bad decisions. I try to own up to whatever I deserve and take it. But when it’s your children who are having to deal with their consequences, it can be harder to stand by and watch.

All human sin seems so much worse in its consequences than in its intentions.~ Reinhold Niebuhr

Coping with the demands of everyday life would be exceedingly trying if one could arrive at solutions to problems only by actually performing possible options and suffering the consequences.~ Albert Bandura

Everyone will experience the consequences of his own acts. If his acts are right, he’ll get good consequences; if they’re not, he’ll suffer for it.~ Harry Browne

It’s the whole, You Reap What You Sow kind of thing. Except I was always terrified by that Biblical concept…until I realized that it went both ways. It doesn’t have to be a fearful thing: I simply need to be sowing good things.

And if I don’t, well…my eyeballs won’t be plucked out. But…I WILL feel the weight of something gone wrong. I will backtrack instead of advance. It won’t be as great as it could have been. Not forever, but for a little while…

We’re trying to teach our children this. Daily. And sometimes it doesn’t feel very important when it’s over things like, “DO NOT leave your dirty clothes ON THE FLOOR!!!” or “Do NOT pick on your brother!” or “QUIT going into your sister’s room when she’s not there!” But really, it is.

We want to do the right things so that we reap a loving relationship between brother and sister instead of a combative one. A clean floor will go a long way in keeping the mama from losing her mind and peace really is desired among us all.

Don’t mind me, I’ll get off the rant soon.

But not yet.

There’s a reason for all the bossing around. Sometimes I feel like such a bossy human being with this motherhood business. I really get tired of telling (AND asking nicely) little and not so little people what to do. I’d like nothing better than the dirty clothes to take care of themselves, to eat all the sugar we want, to let the homework go to the dogs, to join the circus if we wanted and to live a jolly, carefree life.

But I’m raising humans that are going to grow up and have to answer for themselves and so help me, they are going to be capable! They will be true to their word~ say what they mean and mean what they say! And they will have clean ears and brushed teeth and the best grades they’re capable of while getting there!

Deep breath.

So we’ll take our consequences with the rest of our lumps and we will make something grow out of it.

Hopefully something beautiful or delicious. I’d take either.

Surefire Ways To Be A Christmas Grump

December 13, 2011

For some people, everything is glitter and good cheer at Christmas time. For others, it’s a little less rosy. I love this time of year, but there are some days Grumpdom is just impossible to avoid.

Here are a few Surefire Ways You TOO Can Be a Christmas Grump!

1. Decide between Halloween and Christmas that you really have to get serious about those unwanted pounds.

2. Wait until Dec. 13th to start your Christmas shopping.

3. Go to the Post Office. Enough Said.

4. Realize after your trip to the Post Office, that the box in the trunk also needed to be shipped ASAP. Head back to the Post Office…one hour before closing.

5. Hear how expensive it is to ship a box.

(Apparently, I can’t really say enough about the Post Office.)

6. Pass colds back and forth throughout the household multiple times.

7. Try to find a non-Christmas song on the radio.

8. Untangle and hang Christmas lights.  (I’ve bequeathed this job to Nate from day one, so I’m being preventative here.)

9. Try to find all white candy canes.

10. Go to Target to buy socks and get trampled by the Christmas shoppers.

11. Help your children stay sane through the large school projects teachers seem intent on piling on this time of year.

12. Keep everyone well-rested through an extra busy schedule and #11.

13. Charge through the inevitable migraine for my girl due to #11 and #12.

14. Add braces to the mix! (Coming up on Friday for G: spacers. And next Wed: braces!)

15. Think about all the ways to be a Christmas Grump…

OK, thanks, I got it out. Now I can carry on!

What puts you on edge during the Christmas holidays?

Fun, Flutes and Alvin

December 9, 2011

If you need something delightful and Christmas-y to do today, head on over to the Mall of America at 1:45 and hear my daughter play in a fantastic flute choir. Don’t I sound like a mother? It’s true, though, it will be fantastic. She is SO excited about it.

My girl will be the one in the red Alvin sweatshirt and stocking hat. Yes, any ABCYC members, THAT red Alvin sweatshirt~ if any of you have one you’d like to get rid of, we’ll take them! ;) We sang there one year with Jesse McCartney for the opening of Alvin & the Chipmunks~ all the girls were thrilled and all the guys were cringing with embarrassment. I have fond memories of that, especially the cringing…good times/free movie.

I’ll be (one) of the proud mamas shooting pictures and video at the same time.

While I’m talking about how proud I am of my daughter~ I can do that once in a while, right? Ahem~ let me show you what she’s been working on at school…

Have I ever mentioned she is a true fan of Stevie Wonder? She knows every word to every song…every lick…it’s awesome.

Then she came home and whipped this one up…truly. She’s on a Stevie roll.

Fun, right? She gives us lots of reasons to work on our pride.
